The Problem:

New users found it intimidating to start their own club or challenge, leading to significant drop-off during onboarding.

This friction negatively impacted both user retention and growth, especially as creators struggled to keep content active.

Role:

Product Designer

Team:

PM, Marketing Lead, Engineering Lead

Platform:

Mobile

(iOS & Android)

Timeline:

~1 month (part of a larger redesign initiative)

The Process

Research:

Conducted user interviews with both creators and everyday users.

Synthesis:

  • Users wanted to jump into a challenge quickly without setup
  • Creators found it exhausting to restart or create challenges repeatedly

Ideation:

Whiteboarding and user flows for simplified onboarding and challenge browsing

Iteration:

Built and tested wireframes and prototypes of a new template-based flow

The Impact

Usability tests showed improvements in users’ ability to start activities with little or no guidance, and users appreciated the flexibility and clarity of the template-based flows.

The Solution:

Challenge templates: pre-built, reusable activities that users can join anytime

This allows users to browse and save templates that they can start anytime. We also included the ability to rate templates and share how effective and how difficult the activity is.

Creators design once, and participants can start independently, reducing maintenance effort.
